The McClellan saddle was a riding saddle designed by George B. McClellan. McClellan saddles were adopted by the Army in 1858 and were derived, with modification, from the Grimsley saddle. The original stirrups forthe saddle were bent wood with leather hoods, but later in 1912 these were replaced with steel stirrups. In 1928 quarter rigging straps were removed and girth billets were added as well as the skirt. This saddle is inexcellent condition and is from 1880-1900. The saddle has a 14" seat from the pommel to the cantle (the piece is marked on a brass tag “11 1/2 Inch Seat.” This has the early wood and leather stirrups. This piece isstrongly believed to have been a Cavalry saddle used in Montana. This is from the Dale E. Moore Collection in Belgrade, Montana. Dale started and runs theMontana Horseman Saddle Building School. This piece is from his over 50 year collection of rare saddles.
