Maynard Second Model Single Shot Breech Loading Civil War Carbine

This is a nice example of a Second Model Maynard manufactured during the Civil War, from an approximately 20,000 total production. Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address on the right front of the frame and four line Maynard "1851/1859" patent marking on the left side. 3 3/4 inch of the breech end of the barrel is octagon and the left side flat is marked with the letter "S". The barrel, hammer, trigger and buttplate are blue. The frame and lever are casehardened. It is equipped with a pinched front sight and a three leaf folding rear sight marked with an "N" on the left side of the base. There is an "N" stamped on the base of the ring bar and tang of the buttplate, and the serial number appears on the lower tang. The walnut stock is a straight grip with no forearm and the left side wrist is marked with the boxed "GWL" script cartouche running horizontally and a boxed script "JM" vertically, with a small "N" just ahead of the buttplate tang.

Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with some minor thinning and some scattered minor spotting. The buttplate has a smooth crisp dark brown patina. The frame, hammer and lever retain 60% original case colors with the balance a brown patina with some minor spotting. The saddle bar and front attachment screw are both absent. The stock is also very fine with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are clear and crisp. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
