This is a "Model 1863" Second Model carbine manufactured from 1863 to 1865. Blade front and 3-leaf rear sights, with "S" stamped on the left flat. The left side of the frame has the four line Maynard patent marking and the right side has the three line "Mass. Arms" address. Saddle bar with ring on the left side of frame with an "S" stamped base. Smooth straight grip stock with GWL" and "JM" boxed cartouches and a crescent buttplate.

Condition: Very fine. The nicotene coated barrel retains 70% original blue finish with the balance a smooth dark patina with some minor pitting. The receiver has the case colored pattern under the old nicotene coating. The remaining surfaces have a smooth brown patina. There is extensive minor pitting on the buttplate. The stock is excellent with some scattered minor handling marks. The cartouches are crisp and clear.
