Maynard patent single shot rifles were introduced in the 1860s. This example is an Improved Target Rifle No. 16 with a windage adjustable front sight and a Maynard vernier tang sight. There is no rear sight seat on the barrel. The left side of the receiver has the four line Maynard patent dates marking followed by "1873" and the right side has the three line Mass Arms address stamped above "1882". The lower tang has the serial number "1865". Mounted with a very highly figured burl American walnut pistol grip stock with matching Schnabel forearm. Stock and forearm are also feature checkering and the buttstock is fitted with a Swiss type buttplate. The barrel is blue, the receiver and lever are casehardened and the buttplate is nickel plated.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish showing some high edge wear. The receiver and lever retain 30% of the bright original case colors in and around the protected areas, otherwise faded to a silver-gray. The buttplate remains most of the original nickel finish. The wood is also very fine with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
