Dixon explored two distinct worlds in this work: the modernistic clarity of design and color of the monolith, rendered in cool purples and blues, which then juxtaposes with formal concerns of impressionism in the foreground, rendered in red, orange and yellow tones. A moment of genius is revealed in the application of a faint line of yellow coloration, signifying the intense heat emanating from the rocks.
This scene was inspired by a personal journey to Monument Valley in Arizona in 1922, where he chanced upon the imposing butte, its shape sculpted by centuries of wind, water and blowing sand. He then translated the awe of this experience onto canvas in the form of “The Monument”. Painting exhibits its original labels and ink stamps from its numerous exhibition venues. It is not only signed on the canvas, but bears an inscription on the reverse:
