Maya Standing Male Figure with Left Hand on Righ
Standing Male Figure with Left Hand on Right Wrist
Maya, Jaina
A.D. 550 - 900
Ceramic, traces of original paint
Height 8 in. Width 2 5/8 in.

The figure stands stiffly on long-calved legs, looking straight forward with an almost blank stare. His left hand rests lightly on his right at waist level where the bent arms meet. He wears what may have been a short sleeveless tunic gathered at the waist by a wide belt with a flap folded to extend downward at front center almost to the knees. The lower edge of the tunic was cut at several points to allow ease of movement. Circular appliqué tabs decorate both front and back of the tunic, over which a large coil-form necklace supports a concave circular piece, which once had something attached at its center. He wears two-part ear spools, and a stocking-cap-like head covering secured by a band tied at back. An element that once capped the head covering is broken away.
Delicate and finely rendered facial tattooing is of special interest. A possible inward-facing but simplified serpent head marks either temple-cheekbone area, while a skeletal jaw complete with articulation points and teeth, is defined along either jaw.
Overall condition is good, with considerable remaining post-firing Maya blue and white paint. There are metallic deposits on the back.

Provenance
Sotheby's New York: sale 7900, 15 May 2003, Lot 256, p.175
