Maya Seated Figure with Deer Headdress
Seated Figure with Deer Headdress
Maya, Jaina
A.D. 550 - 900
Ceramic, traces of paint
Height 7 1/2 in. Width 3 1/2 in.

The male figure is shown seated cross-legged and wearing a kilt with wide belt. The belt includes a flap at the figure's right and one hanging in front over the legs. While the arms are folded near the torso, the man gestures outward from his mouth with the right hand, as though emphasizing a spoken point. A simple, cord-like necklace holds a large central bead. An exaggeratedly large deer head rests on a rolled cushion atop the man's head, with deer head angled sharply upward and the ears hanging behind the man's head. Since both deer ears are replacements, their size and shape are problematic. The front lower belt flap is considerably restored, and rear elements are missing from the necklace. Remains of red and original Maya blue paint are visible. The figure contains a still-functional whistle.

Provenance
Collection of Jay C. Leff
The John-Platt Collection (Daniel M.
