Width 2 3/8 in.

The irregularly-shaped, relatively flat jadeite pendant has a low relief representation of a male half-figure wearing a feline headdress that appears to engulf the wearer's head within its open mouth. The animal is most likely to be a jaguar, a frequent way (spirit companion) of kings. Below the headdress ear spools are visible. The man's right arm rests against the chest along a belt, with the open-handed left arm diagonally above it so that the hand is below his chin. The jadeite's primary color is a light apple green, with some brownish and grayish mottling. Condition is very good, with diagonally drilled holes running from side to back at either side of the pendant.

Provenance
The Bogousslavsky Collection
Sotheby's, New York: 4 December 1981, lot 71
John-Platt Collection (Daniel M Friedenberg)
Sotheby's, New York: sale 7902, 23 May 2003, lot 298, p.192

Published
Von Winning, Hasso, The John-Platt Collection of Pre-Columbian Art, Charlottesville: The University of Virginia Art Museum, 1986, fig.170, p.85
