Width 2 1/8 in.

This pendant of an ear-spooled dignitary wearing a feline headdress is unusually well developed sculpturally, utilizing the entire jadeite pebble to contribute to the space-occupying substantiality of the image. While the man's facial features are conventionalized, the headdress animal is developed into actively energized forms. In the animal's right eye area, the maker apparently encountered an inclusion or anomaly in the jadeite which forced him to re-drill and thus overly enlarge the eye. This symmetry-destroying "recovery" adds to the overall animation of the headdress. The condition is very good, with a horizontal suspension hole drilled through one inch from the top.

Provenance
The Bogousslavsky Collection
Sotheby's New York: 4 December 1981, lot 75
John-Platt Collection (Daniel M.
