Width 4 5/8 in.

The size and weight of this black stone mask suggest that it was either for a royal belt or to be tied to a shrine effigy. The ambiguous iconography and the uncertain treatment of the mouth scrolls both suggest a relatively early date, perhaps even before the Early Classic was under way. Traces remain of red pigment which once covered the mask. There are a number of small natural flaws in the stone, and the center of the back has old vertical scratches.

Provenance
Dylan Graeme
Dr. Wally and Brenda Zollman, Indianapolis
Butterfields & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7307E, 25 March 2002, lot 5110, p.32, ill. p.32

Imp
