Width 3 7/8 in.

A less than life-sized face panel of typical Teotihacan type, this alabaster example has residues of possibly several layers of overpainting, which suggests its use on more than one occasion. Three drilled holes on each side would have allowed the panel to be attached to other objects or to have decorative elements added. Both eyes and mouth show evidence of inlays, with magnification indicating tooth-shaped impressions at the proper left of the mouth. Such smaller-sized face panels may have had a range of ritual uses, from forming a component of more complex cosmological configurations to forming a part of the accoutrements of deity effigies. The condition is excellent: the words "Xultepec Guer. Mx. / Teo IV" appear on the back.

Provenance
David Walley, Pontotoc, Mississippi
