May, J.M.F. & C.M. Kraay (Ed.) & G.K. Jenkins (Ed.). THE COINAGE OF ABDERA (540-345 B.C.). Royal Numismatic Society. 1966. Crown 4to. xi, (1), 298, (2) pages. London. First edition. original red cloth, gilt; dust jacket. 24 fine plates. Fine. Royal Numismatic Society Special Publication No. 3. After completing his study of the mint of Ainos in 1950 J. M. F. May turned his attention to the still more difficult problems presented by the very varied issues of Abdera on the north Aegean coast; at the time of his premature death in 1961 his work was very nearly complete and has required only minor editorial revision. On the basis of the largest possible body of material, May has re-established the sequence of issues between the foundation of Abdera in 544 B.C. and its capture by Philip II of Macedon c. 350 B.C. He has also devoted particular attention to elucidating the reasons for the frequent changes in the weight standards on which the coins were struck, and to relating the coinage to its contemporary background. Since similar factors affected both Ainos and Abdera, the present work forms a complement to his earlier study. The plates illustrate almost 500 coins, which include nearly all known dies of this mint. Lot weight: 2 lbs 11oz. Subject(s): Ancient Coinage.
