American author and explorer (1847–1936) best known for her travels in Africa in the 1890s, inspired by the activities of Henry Morton Stanley; also noted as a translator of Flaubert's Salammbô. ALS signed “May French-Sheldon, Bébé Bwana,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 9, Hotel Vendome, Boston letterhead, August 12, 1892. Letter to the Rev. J. E. Roy, in part: "You must pardon the unseeming delay in responding to your invitation…Sorrow and the constant pressures caused by my labors in seeing my book Sultan to Sultan through press have alone been the reason…'What I saw and learned in Africa' certainly is the theme of my soul and I trust to promulgate it far and wide and in this way be enabled to feel that I have measurably contributed to the enlightenment of the world at large…You can well understand how hopeful I am of the future success of 'Sultan to Sultan' may have." In fine condition. Accompanied by an original leaflet advertising her book Sultan to Sultan and a contemporary newspaper column describing her as 'A Female Stanley.'
