May, 1908, "The Century Magazine" (962pp., hard) A fascinating volume that contains the first popular account of the Wright Brothers' flight five years earlier, written by the Wright Brothers THEMSELVES. They open the article with the statement: "The article which follows is the first popular account of the experiments prepared by the inventors. The accounts heretofore have been brief statements of the accomplishments without explanation of the manner in which results were attained. The article will be found of special interest, in view of the fact that we have contracted to deliver to the United States Government a complete machine, the trials of which are expected to take place about the time of the appearance of this number of "The Century"". ALSO included in this volume is an article on aviation as a "menace to British supremacy" with comments by Alexander Graham Bell; plus two articles by Percival Lowell, one on the canals of Mars and the other on "proofs of life" on Mars. There is also a first printing of the famous short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, an article by Booker T. Washington, a group of articles by Winston Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, etc. An important volume in unusually fine condition. Great illustrations too.
