Important Russian/Soviet author and activist (1868–1936). Though his criticism of the Communist government led to a relationship marked by conflict and unease, he was ultimately embraced (though closely monitored) by the Stalinist regime, and Stalin himself was a pallbearer at Gorki’s funeral. LS in French, signed “M. Gorchi,” on the reverse of a 5.5 x 3.5 picture postcard of Capri, no date, but postmarked February 14, 1908. Letter in the hand of Gorki’s wife, Maria Andreyeva, who has addressed it to “Ugo Ojetti, Hotel de Vesuve, Napoli.” In full: “My wife and I regret very much the adjourned rendezvous – Hoping that Noad is doing better. All our best regards.” In fine condition, with pencil cancellation to address panel, and a few small corner dings.
