Vellum tribute page, 8.75 x 7, removed from a book assembled to honor Carl Laemmle’s 50th anniversary in the motion picture business. In gorgeous penmanship, Parrish neatly writes: “To Carl Laemmle from Maxfield Parrish: Cornish, New Hampshire, December 9th, 1928. We both try to make pictures that move. Mine rarely do. It must be because mine are artificial, whereas yours are reel pictures.” Scattered staining from adhesive remnants on reverse, and a mottled look due to the nature of the vellum, otherwise fine condition.

A founder of Universal Pictures, Laemmle was an American film-making pioneer who produced or was otherwise involved in more than 400 movies. As alluded to by Parrish in his missive, his version of a “moving picture” differed greatly from Laemmle’s endeavors. For Parrish, it involved enhancing the depth of his paintings by photographing, enlarging, projecting, and tracing half- or full-size objects or figures, then manipulating them to create a unique three-dimensional appearance.
