Large collection of 43 etched portraits of justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, each signed in pencil by the artist: includes 21 signed by painter, lithographer, draftsman and etcher Max Rosenthal (1833-1918) and 22 signed by his son, the portrait artist, printmaker, writer, and collector Albert Rosenthal (1863-1939). The subjects include a wide array of Supreme Court justices and occasionally feature facsimile signatures of the subjects. Subjects signed by Max Rosenthal include Oliver Ellsworth, William Cushing, John Rutledge, Samuel Blatchford, Roger B. Taney, Stephen Johnson Field, L. Q. C. Lamar, John Marshall Harlan, Peter Vivian Daniel, David Davis, James Wilson, and others. Subjects signed by Albert Rosenthal include Samuel Chase, John McKinley, Gabriel Duvall, Benjamin Robbins Curtis, James Wilson, James Moore Wayne, Nathan Clifford, Robert Trimble, Smith Thompson, Thomas Todd, Alfred Moore, Noah Haynes Swayne, Melville Fuller, Horace Gray, Stanley Matthews, and others. Image sizes range from about 4 x 6 to 5 x 7, with overall sizes ranging from 8.5 x 11.5 to 10 x 13. In overall fine condition, with a few diagonal corner creases (not passing through images).
