Jewish-American painter (1881–1961) celebrated for his Cubist works on Jewish themes. ALS in Yiddish, signed “Max,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, March 31, 1943. Handwritten letter to his cousin, Charles Getz, in part (translated): "I would like to ask you for an apology for my keeping silence that long a time…The first reason to excuse myself is that I had to prepare two exhibitions: one in New York, and the other one for the Carnegie Institute…The other reason is that I was in a bad mood, because my son Meinard was drafted on the 29th January; he had to interrupt his studies in college. Now my state of mind is a little better, and I got used to the thought of the terrible war led by the 'Capitalist locust'…You are a decent man who worked all his life like a slave, anyhow I would like to convey to you that you are (I speak to you from the depths of my heart) a more decent human being than the millions of professional 'intellectuals.' A person can be very learned, and despite his knowledge be a moron, with lack of insight about himself, who becomes an enemy of himself and an enemy of other people…How my heart aches about the fact we witness, that after the accomplishment of the Soviet Union to rescue the world from the Nazi snake, she is being criticized and made fun of by her own allies." In fine condition.
