Max Th. Streckenbach, Still Life Poppies & Guelder Rose, 1910
The painter Max Theodor Streckenbach was famous for his depiction of floral still lifes, he seems to be particularly impressed by the poppy that regularly appears in his paintings. Our painting as well, executed in oil on canvas and created around 1910, shows a bouquet of poppies in glowing red color, which is presented in an earthen vase with blue decor. In front of the bouquet Streckenbach placed a few guilder roses whose petals he easily applied impasto on the canvas. The radiance of the shimmering colors is transferred even on the background that appears in a dark velvety red here and there.

The painting is signed lower right ‘M. Streckenbach’ and verso wears an old gallery label of the Gallery Commeter in Hamburg on the frame. It is in good condition with a tiny retouched spot in the upper left margin. The frame shows slight signs of use as well. The dimensions of the stretcher are 55 x 69 cm. Framed the painting measures 67 x 80 cm.

Max Theodor Streckenbach (1865-1936)

Max Theodor Streckenbach was born 1865 in Eckernförde. He studied medicine and Pharmacy since he was meant to take over his father's pharmacy, and besides he further studied Botany as well as art history. His fondness for botany led him to take lessons from his role model, the French painter Fantin-Latour. Streckenbach soon became one of the most famous painters of flower still lives in northern Germany and supplied the Gallery Commeter in Hamburg regularly with his works that eventually gained international recognition and were also often reproduced as copper prints.
