German-born philologist and Indologist (1823–1900) known as one of the founders of the western academic field of Indian studies and the discipline of comparative religion. Remarkable collection of letters and manuscripts from Muller written in German, English, and French, comprising twenty-three ALSs totaling nearly fifty pages, two postcards, three handwritten manuscript fragments, and two personal calling cards, dated from 1854 to 1895. Covering a period of 40 years of his work, the collection includes private notes and personal messages as well as content-rich scientific letters to colleagues. One undated manuscript reads, in part (translated): “But while Plato shows a deeper insight into the mysteries of language than almost any other philosopher that has come after him, he has no eyes for that marvelous harvest of words garnered up in our dictionaries, and in the dictionaries of all the races of the earth.” A letter from 1876, in part (translated): "I sent you my little book just as silent thanks for your poetic diary, which recalled me many things to remembrance…I do believe that the true human is not completely buried in Germany. What has been, can be again." In overall fine condition. A wonderful archive brimming with interesting content.
