ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6, April 20. Letter to Mr. Childers on Sanskrit and Pâli words and grammar, in part: "I have at last finished the new edition of my Lectures and am for a time a free man. I have, therefore, looked at your first sheet more carefully…I have no doubt abhirâgâ is right in Pâli, but it is very curious. Abhi does not mean a higher degree, as B.R. say, at least not if rest is expressed. Abhi comes to mean over if motion is expressed, such as abhi bhâ, to over come, literally to come over a thing. Abhi always expressed something coming to anything else. I do not think that abhidharma means high law, as B.R. suggest, but additional law, like abhisamâkâra, not higher duty, but extra duty…It is a matter of feeling rather than anything else, but I cannot take in abhirâga as a supreme King, particularly as adhirâga is a recognized word…I have glanced at the specimen of the Bālāvatāra. It is useful certainly, & I hope Mr. Lee will finish it, but it requires very careful revision. There are some technical grammatical terms which it is difficult to understand without the help of Sanskrit grammar." In fine condition, with a few water spots and minor bleeding to ink.
