German painter and printmaker (1847–1935) best known for his etching and lithography. Original vintage signed ink self-portrait on an off-white 5.75 x 4.25 sheet, with Lieberman drawing a detailed portrait of himself in profile, sitting with a large basket on his back and wearily leaning on a walking stick, signed in the lower right, “M. Lieberman,” adding “Berlin 10, 31,” above his signature. Sheet is partially affixed to an identical size card. Very subtle central vertical fold, otherwise fine condition.

Disheveled, despondent, displaced…perhaps this is how Lieberman saw himself in 1931 as the membership of the Prussian Academy of Arts began a slow turn toward anti-Semiticism. As president of that esteemed organization, his fight with the more conservative membership began following his desire to allow more modern artists into the Academy, a battle that exposed the fragility of the institution’s political independence. Within a few years and throughout World War II the Academy would become part of the Nazi cultural bureaucracy, with that sense of doom and despair evident here. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
