Max Friedrich Koch (1893-1930), Riverside Houses, 1917
Max Friedrich Koch created this oil painting in 1917. The work depicts a row of houses on a river bank by night, seen from the water. The river is quiet, only a few scattered windows are lit and set luminous accentuations. The view is rendered in muted colors and fascinates with its peaceful atmosphere. Skillfully the German painter captured the idyllic nighttime. Koch was fascinated by water and has painted numerous motifs with rivers and lakes.

According to an exhibition label on the reverse of the frame, the work was shown at the artist society Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover.

The painting is in very good condition aside from some color abrasions along the edges due to rubbing of the frame. It is signed and dated lower right ‘Max Koch 17’. On the reverse of the frame there is an exhibition label of the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, which is numbered by hand ‘1807’. The frame shows some signs of wear. The framed work measures 52 x 67 cm, the artist's board measures 35 x 50 cm.
