American socialist and writer (1883-1969) whose outspoken leftist leanings led him to be tried twice for sedition during World War I. He later became an ardent supporter of McCarthyism, and served as an editor for Reader's Digest. Vintage matte-finish 4.25 x 6.5 half-length photo of Eastman wearing a suit and with his arms crossed, affixed along the top edge to a slightly larger mount, signed in the lower border of the mount in fountain pen, "Max Eastman, 91 Greenwich Ave., N.Y., Please return!" In fine condition, with three small stains, one of which is beneath his right eye.
