Mauser Model GEW 98 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Scarce Semi-Turret System and Scope Case
The forward scope base covers the top of the receiver ring. The left side of the receiver ring is marked with the Imperial Eagle and the right side is marked with three crown over script letter proofs. The left side wall is marked "Gew 98", the left rear of the barrel is marked with the matching serial number and the top directly behind the rear sight is marked with the letter "S". The scope is mounted on a rare semi-turret mount. These mounts are pictured and described in Senich's book "The German Sniper 1914 - 1945" on pages 51 - 54. The scope is a Visar 2 3/4x with a top, forward mounted elevation drum very similar to the scope in Senich's book minus the "ears" on either side. The left side of the scope is marked "VISAR " 2 3/4x / No 2050/I". The front mount assembly slides into a corresponding recess in the front base and then the scope is locked into place with a spring loaded latch located beneath the scope which catches on the base after the single stud slides into a hole in the base. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight and ski slope rear sight with graduation markings of 4 to 20 (even numbers) marked on either side. Mounted with a full pistol grip stock and handguard with flat buttplate and unit disk on the right side. Below the disk are three proofmarks, the underside is marked with the matching serial number and the wrist area has two crown proofs. Complete with a black leather scope case. The safety lever is mismatched (marked "13"), otherwise all visible numbers match.

The stock is good with a sanded moderate gouge on the right side of the forearm and overall minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a military weapon of this age. The bolt has been renumbered to match rifle. The exterior of the scope is excellent and the optics are a bit hazy. The scope case is very good. The action is excellent.
