German Mauser Model 1871 Bolt Action Single Shot Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #87417 (mismatched bolt), 11mm CF cal., 32.75'' round steel barrel marked ''(crown) / Amberg'' on top flat ahead of breech, five proof/acceptance marks on right flat, and ''(crown) / L'' (the monarch's cypher of King Ludwig of Bavaria), serial number and caliber designation (''11'') on left flat. All steel fittings including three barrel bands (front with integral bayonet lug), sling swivels, ramrod with ribbed head, buttplate marked ''B. / 2.1.F.4. / 196'' on tang, and triggerguard having a separate bronze bow. Left flat of receiver marked ''I.G. (Infanterie-Gewehr) Mod. 71.'' in gothic script; right side marked ''1882 1881'' in different size fonts; several screws marked with last four letters of the serial number. Walnut fullstock. Condition is very good showing bright metal parts. Stock shows scratches and dings commensurate with military usage. Action is smooth and tight; bore is bright with sharp rifling. The Model 71 Mauser occupies a unique and important place in firearms development as the first rifle firing metallic centerfire cartridges produced on an assembly line basis. Est.: $500-$750.
