Hitler specified tht the new design could not tap gas from the barrel , and had to have a "manual over - ride " in case the autoloading failed . Mauser produced the G41 (M) in answer. It uses the "Bang" system to+E122 tap the gas from the end of the barrel, which then impinges an annular ring on the barrel, driving it backwards into an operarting rod which in turn forces the action backwards. There is also a bolt handle for cocking the rifle initially. The rifle is long and heavy, with complicated machining ill suited to wartime production . The screw on muzzle cap was prone to fouling adn the annular ring+E129 changed the barrel harmonics, impairing accuracy. The legnth of the action placed the protruding magazine at an awkward location, and overall the design was a failure. According to "Hitler's Garands, only between 8,000 and 20,000 G41 (M) were produced and many were issued to troops in Stalingrad adn lost there. This piece is in excellent condition, all original , with all matching numbers and crisp cartouches. An extremely rare piece and almost impossible to upgrade. One could go a lifetime and not see another ] Ser # 9597
