French artist (1876–1958) and a member of the Fauvists, his work is typically marked by bold colors and eccentric brushwork. ALS in French, signed “Vlaminck,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 7.5, La Tourilliere letterhead, October 18, 1931. Letter to novelist and painter Eugene Dabit. In part (translated): “I’ve read Hotel du Nord which I found human and lively…as I said to Lucien Descaves…if I were a member of the Academie Goncourt Eugene Dabit would get my vote for the prize this year! And believe me you know I have no self-interest in singing your praises. If one day you have the time and notion to come and see me, your visit will give me pleasure.” In fine condition, with central horizontal fold through portion of signature and mild toning. Novelist Lucien Descaves was a founding member of the Academie Goncourt. Dabit’s Hotel du Nord never won the Goncourt prize but did get the Prix du Roman Populiste. The classic movie Hotel du Nord appeared in 1938.
