Maurice Tiberius, AD 582-602. Gold Tremissis (1.5 g) mi
Maurice Tiberius, AD 582-602. Gold Tremissis (1.5 g) minted at Constantinople. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right of Maurice Tiberius. Reverse: Cross potent. S. 488; R. 1027; D.O. 14. Typically doubled (reverse). Lustrous Extremely Fine.

This group of tremisses and semisses were most probably from the same hoard, as evidenced by their bold strike, mint luster, care in striking and large, full-weight flans. It could well be that the coins did not circulate, as seen by the absence of wear. Fractional gold from the late sixth century is not often seen in such elevated condition.
Estimated Value $200 - 250.
