Lithographs by Maurice Estève stand out due to their decorative colorfulness; the lithography "Anubis" fetches up to 1,500 euro at international auctions

The very decorative and colorful lithograph was created in 1969. Abstracted composed from colorful and textured areas a standing dog-like figure can be seen. It is the eponymous ancient Egyptian god of the dead Anubis, who is usually depicted as a man with a dog or jackal head.

The lithograph in colors is signed lower right in pencil ‘Estève’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘94/95’. The sheet is overall somewhat, partly stronger toned and darkened along the edges of the mat window. The margins are creased, lower left there is a faint scratch. The sheet is mounted to a passepartout at the reverse sheet edges. The frame indicates slight signs of wear. The image measures 65.4 x 50.1 cm, the sheet 78 x 59.7 cm. The framed dimensions are 87 x 69.2 cm.

Maurice Estève (1904-2001)

Maurice Estève moved with his parents to Paris in 1913, where he became interested in art. He taught himself as a painter from 1923 and worked as a designer in a fabric factory. From 1928 his work evolving increasingly away from reality and towards a lyrical and poetic abstraction. Estèves first exhibition took place in 1930 in the gallery Yvangot in Paris, many more followed. Also in collections and museums his works are represented. (fea)
