Letter to Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, in full: "Your fine note of the 16th just arrived. I think you know how much I appreciate the thought it contains. I am a little surprised at your temerity. Do you think that last you have conquered fate? Please call the first time you are here." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by a carbon copy letter from Groves dated September 16, 1949, congratulating Ridgway on his appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff and continuing: "Your new position will be one where you will be able to exert a tremendous amount of influence on Army policies and I can think of no one that I would rather have exerting that influence tan your good self." After directing all US forces in the Caribbean in 1948 and 1949, Ridgway was assigned to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration in August 1949 under General J. Lawton Collins.
