American naval officer (1794–1858) who took a leading role in the establishment of international trade with the formerly insular nation of Japan. Mexican-American War-dated LS signed “M. C. Perry,” one lightly-lined page, 8 x 10, March 24, 1847. While on board the Flagship Mississippi off Vera Cruz, Perry assigns a sailor to duty. In full, “You will report yourself to Captain J. Mayo, for duty on board the U. S. Steam Mississippi under his command.” Second integral page bears an address panel in another hand. In fine condition, with some scattered light toning, intersecting folds, and a small spot to left edge, affecting nothing. Well-preserved piece with direct naval content.
