Pioneering naval officer, meteorologist, and oceanographer (1806–1873) who published the first textbook of modern oceanography. LS signed “M. F. Maury,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, November 5, 1851. Letter to Spencer Fullerton Baird, assistant secretary at the Smithsonian Institution. In full: "Thanks for your attention in reminding me of Albany papers. The papers which I wished to appear—viz. Equatorial 'Cloud Ring' and 'Geological Agency of Winds' were handed you in Albany. If you want matter, and desire it, I will if I can find time, prepare abstracts of my other papers for you." In fine condition. 'On the Geological Agency of the Winds' and 'Of Clouds and the Equatorial Cloud Ring' were two of Maury's noteworthy meteorological studies, which he presented before the sixth meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held at Albany in late August 1851.
