American naval officer (1794–1858) who took a leading role in the establishment of international trade with the formerly insular nation of Japan. ALS signed “M. C. Perry,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, August 22, 1834. Perry writes Thomas S. Perkins of New London, Connecticut, to settle his brother’s estate. In part: “Above I transmit a draft for 125 dollars being the amount recd on the note…in favor of the Estate of my late brother. Doubtless the whole amount of $150 with simple interest will be paid in the course of a few months in finally settling with the Navy Dept. I would insist on a credit of $53 charged on account of an ordinary seaman of the Fairfield Sloop of War. I understand that Glentworth whose note for $50 is in my Hands, is now in New York. The only mode of recovering this amount will be I presume to place it in the hands of a Lawyer.” The top half of the first page, which once bore the draft referenced here, has been removed, affecting no text. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, separations along a few of the folds, edge chipping, creasing, and a few spots of soiling.
