Henri Matisse was one of the most prolific and beloved artists of the 20th century with a career spanning more than 50 years. The original image was created in 1950 by Matisse for his exhibition at the Maison de la Pensee Francaise. The woman?s face was created using cut paper as was the block letter text. The text at the bottom of the poster was handwritten. The maquette was then taken to Mourlot studio where it was transferred to lithography and reproduced in posters such as this. All of the prints from Matisse?s cut-paper period which began in the 1950?s were made into lithographs in the same manner.
This beautiful poster was printed using three colors, black, yellow and blue and is a wonderful example of the abstract simplicity that is characteristic of Matisse?s work. It is matted in black to create an additional contrast to the brightness of the piece and is mounted in a black wood frame that provides the flat image with texture and richness. Including the unique frame, this piece measures 23 ½? x 27 ½.? It is truly a wonderful image that would be an affordable way to begin a Matisse collection and would also be a excellent gift for the contemporary art enthusiast in your family.
