Matching Tintypes- Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln
Matching Tintypes of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln in Carte de Visite Mounts. This lot features a pair of tintypes in matching CDV mounts. The mounts are cream colored with lovely blue borders made to resemble a hanging portrait frame. On the reverse of each is a slip of paper that holds the tintypes in the mount. On these papers it reads: "Union Card Picture, Made By George F. Ayer, Photographer, 161 Middle Street, Portland." The Mary Todd portrait is a head and shoulders shot of a younger looking Mary, wearing her typical headband or scarf. This is an engraving taken from a photo that was made when Mary was 42. It is in very fine condition; light overall toning on the mount; tintype is very fine and free from scratches; no border on picture side; square corners. The Abraham tintype is an engraving made from Brady's famous five-dollar bill photograph (#O-92). The original portrait and engraving has Lincoln facing the other way, but tintypes are often reverse. The same goes for Mary Todd's portrait. The Lincoln example is in very fine condition; light overall toning on the mount; the tintype itself is quite clean and crisp; no border on the front; square corners. An exquisite duo of husband and wife. We have had several matched pairs of Lincoln and Mary Todd tintypes, but we have never handled this variation before. From the collection of Stanley King.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
