Matched Pair of Parfleches,
Crow or Shoshone, late 19th-century, one of buffalo hide, one of cowhide. With polychrome decorations of a central panel of a green diamond edged in blue, separated by line of a yellow rectangle with the diamond lined in blue; the panel surrounded by thicker red and green lines, each banded in blue, the exteriors bordered with triangular motifs of red, yellow, and green, with a red square in each corner. One 29" long x 13" wide, the other 28" long x 12.75" wide. According to Western Reserve accession records the donor's grandfather "Byrne was Army Surgeon who was posted at Ft. Moultrie in 1860. Soon died there, her uncle's (his son's) also sent to frontier and fought Custer (sic.) Bags could be 1860-1870." During the Civil and Indian Wars period, there were at least three "Byrne's" -- all from Maryland -- who served in the regular Army, two of whom were surgeon's (see Heitman 1988:271). All survived the Civil War. The original donor, the Marchesa de Zahara, also gifted the Third Phase Chief’s Blanket (Lot 108) and the child’s wearing blanket (Lot 109). These items were entered as having been collected by Captain A.J. Barnitz , a member of the 7th Cavalry whose Indian War career ended in 1870. It is possible that these parfleches were also collected by Barnitz, and not Byrne. Provenance: Western Reserve Historical Society (EST 4000-6000) Deaccessioned from the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Excellent.
