Featured in this lot is this Mata Ortiz polychrome Genovena Sandoval olla pot. The pottery vessel is wonderfully and professionally crafted ceramic construction. The olla pottery vessel shows polychrome decoration with natural red and black paint set to a dark brown coloration of the ceramic material. The pottery vessel is marked on the bottom 'Genovena Sandoval.' Mata Ortiz pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. The condition of this pottery vessel is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this of this pottery vessel is 6 1/2" x 6" x 6". The collective weight of this pottery vessel is 1lb 6oz.
