Mata Ortiz Large Black Olla - Consolacion Quezada. This beautifully burnished and textured olla was made and is signed on the bottom by Consolacion Quezada, the older sister of the famous Mata Ortiz potter, Juan Quezada. She was taught the craft by Juan and Nicolas in the early 1970s. She is known for her large pieces. This impressive one measures 11'' high x 12'' wide. There are four macaw bird designs which are created by pushing in (indenting) the body of the pot with a fingernail or stick. The rim also has indention hash marks. Mata Ortiz is a small village in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The potters of Mata Ortiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating Mimbres designs shared by the Southwest, Native American cultures.
