(Disney, 1943) A master set of storyboard artwork for the unrealized World War II-era Walt Disney Studios film, The Gremlins, based on the novel by beloved children's author Roald Dahl. These (9) photographic storyboards chronicle the entire plot of the film. Disney Legend Bill Justice was involved in the artwork for the film, having provided illustrations for Dahl's book, which was written with the film adaptation in mind. The plot concerns Gremlins, little creatures who cause mishaps and mechanical failures on airplanes (an urban legend and universal scapegoat amongst Royal Air Force pilots), resolving to stop plaguing Allied fliers and start making common cause against the Nazi enemy. Issues with copyright of the original Gremlin lore and wrangles over creative control with the British Air Ministry, to which Dahl was enlisted at the time, lead Walt Disney to drop the project. Interestingly, even after the film was abandoned, the Gremlin character became a popular feature of U.S.A. military unit insignias designed by Disney Studios during the war. From the 1940s onward, The Gremlins has been considered one of the great what-if/lost films in animation history. The set consists of (9) large photographic storyboards on RC paper measuring approximately 42"x55" and is in generally fine condition with some corner creasing, tiny tears, and edge wear. This extremely rare master storyboard set represents a unique opportunity to own a lost piece of Disney, animation, and war-time Hollywood history.
