Massive spearpoint Bowie knife, marked “W. M. Cotton, Leominster, Mass.” With original brass mounted scabbard, similar to example pictured in The Bowie Knife by Norm Flayderman, page 153. The knife measures 19” overall, with nearly 14” blade, which is over 2-1/8” across the widest part of the blade. The blade is double-edged with a raise median ridge on both sides, and shows a dark hardwood grip secured by brass pins. The blade is in very good condition showing some slight scratches, minor sharpening, a few nicks, and areas of light erosion, spidering just starting. The grip is very good plus with just slight handling, normal aging. The scabbard is in good condition some cracking, small losses, opening at the seams, normal aging, and retains its tip and throat. W. M. Cotton was a well-known manufacturer of machinery, tools, and combs. Mr. Flayderman dates this style knife to 1861 during the Civil War period. A very attractive and large Bowie.
