Massive spear point Bowie knife marked “W.M. Cotton, Leominster, Mass.” measuring nearly 19” overall with 14” blade that is almost 2 1/8” across the widest part. The knife retains its original brass mounted leather scabbard. A similar example is pictured in “The Bowie Knife” by Norm Flayderman on page 153 and the former owner who discovered it in Australia was told by Mr. Flayderman that this was one of only two examples that he had viewed by this maker and this knife is superior in condition. The blade shows some light pitting and minor surface erosion but retains a great deal of its original polish with slight sharpening at the edges. The grip is rosewood with brass pins and also in very good condition. The scabbard retains its original tip and throat with button hanger. The scabbard shows just some normal leather aging and is at least good to very good. An impressive Bowie knife that was made to accompany Union troops to the Civil War and W.M. Cotton was a well-known manufacturer of machinery, tools, combs and other implements before the war broke out. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
