<p>The extremely popular elephant-headed god Ganesh is also known as 'The Remover of Obstacles' in Hinduism. His nature is gentle and affectionate and his image is found over the main entrance of many Indian homes to ward off evil. Symbolically, his round fat body contains the entire universe and his curved trunk is powerful enough to remove all obstacles. He is the patron of learning and the giver of good fortune. He is honored before a journey is begun, a book is written, or any business is undertaken. The story of how Ganesh came to have an elephant's head is an interesting one.

<p>Ganesh is one of the children of Shiva and his wife Parvati. Shiva is a very ancient god, the god who presides over the dissolution of all things in the universe. But he actually represents the underlying unity of existence in which all opposites are reconciled, including birth and death. Shiva is also Lord of the Dance, dancing out the awesome cosmic rhythms of creation and destruction.
