Massive G. Bates 4 Bore Double Barrel Side lock Hammer Shotgun with Case
This massive shotgun features 42 inch barrels with a single bead sight on the solid concave rib which is marked "GEO BATE. 152. STEELHOUSE LANE. BIRMINGHAM" and the barrel flats are marked with various nitro and crown proofs and the water table is marked with the serial number and two crown over "V" and crown over GV. 3" chambers with an extractor. The frame features the break lever mounted on the underside and swings to the right to break the barrels. Each lock is marked "G BATE". The barrels are currently brown, the frame and locks were casehardened and the remaining parts are blue. The shotgun is mounted with a checkered forearm and round knob pistol grip stock with a solid rubber recoil pad. The length of pull is 14 1/2". Complete with a period wooden case with metal corner protectors, large leather handle and double leather straps. The outside of the lid is marked in paint "F. PW / CAMBRIDCE / VIA / BALTIMORE / 1"

Condition: Very good as refinished. The barrels retain 98% brown finish with some scattered minor spotting. The frame and locks have aged to a smooth silver gray patina. The remaining metal surfaces retain 95% blue finish with some wear and thinning on the under lever. The wood has been refinished and the checkering has been recut, and the wood remains very good with a few minor dings and handling marks, and sharp checkering. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. The case is fair with some minor cracks and a large crack running across the center of the lid. Parts of the straps have torn off and are in the case. The case does remain solid.
