Massive Flintlock American buck & ball musket marked “Perkin, Philada” on the barrel, approx. 85 cal., 59” barrel and 6’ 3” overall, unmarked lock, full wood stock with semi-club butt and brass furniture including trigger guard, butt plate, reverse side decorative lock plate, wrist inlay and ferrules. The gun shows a dark brown patina over scattered erosions and pin prick pitting on the barrel and a dark grey patina to the lock plate. The action is good, the bore dark and the brass mountings show light engraving. The wood is in overall good condition showing wear and some scattered mars and dings; there are also light areas of worn raised carving around the top tang at the wrist of the stock and at the point where the first brass ferrule is positioned; the front portion of the wood stock also shows two horizontal grooves that culminate at the muzzle with a down turn. Information from our consignor indicates that a Joseph Perkins was a Superintendent of the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal. Est.: $9,500-$10,000.
