Carved with a super massive Foo Lion Playing Ball which has a silk riband through. The lovely foo lion keeps the riband in its wide mouth and pulling it with its lower claws. The facial expression is vividly expressed. Its big lovely eyes are real and shows the foo lion is definately in high spirits and enjoying the game. The Chinese foo dog is considered sacred in the Buddhist religion. They are ancient sacred canines of Asia that were used as guards for the Buddhist temples. It is said that the open-mouthed foo dog eats in all evil spirits and they cannot escape for the closed mouth pair keeps it contained.
"The male foo dog with his left foot resting on the world represents success and protection of worldly goods. Foo dogs are not dogs they are stylized lion carvings. From what I understand in the Buddhist faith, the lion is considered to be a noble and divine animal, a protector of truth and against evil in all forms. I also read that "Fu" in Chinese means "luck" or "happiness" and that the Foo Dogs are lucky, happy lions that bring good fortune and scare away evil.
