Massachusetts Statesman Charles Sumner ALS
Massachusetts Statesman Charles Sumner Autograph Letter Signed as Senator “Charles Sumner”. Three pages, 5” x 8”, Senate Chambers Washington, D.C. , April 11, 1872, frayed at the right edge, toned and with the usual fold creases, else very good. This passionate letter was obviously written in haste as there are many runs and smears to the ink. It reads in part: “…I agree with Mr. Stanton in his dying legacy to me that Genl. Grant is ‘unfit’ to be Presdt. On this point my conviction is profound, & I wish to have my country, & the cause of good govt. and the African race from the prolonged rule of such a man with whom the Presidency is nothing but a plaything or a perquisite…”. A most interesting item. Ex. Henry E. Luhrs Collection.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
