Massachusetts August 18, 1775 10s Very Fine. The pates for both the face and back of this note were engraved by Paul Revere and printed in his shop. The issue date is four months to the day after his historic midnight ride. The combination of Paul Revere's hands-on work on this note and the patriotic engraving on the back depicting a Revolutionary soldier with an upraised sword in his right hand and the Magna Charta in his other hand have always made this one of the most desirable acquisitions for a collector of Colonial Currency. Above the soldier on a curved line are the English words, "Issued in Defence(sic) of American Liberty." Below the soldier, in Latin, appears the motto, "Ense petit placidam, sub Libertate Quietem," which translates to, "By arms, he seeks peace with freedom." This note has some very light stains, but it is well margined on both sides and is free of problems and restorations. A lovely example that deserves to grace an important collection of Colonial Currency. Newman does not price any note in this issue above Fine, and Friedberg prices only in Very Good.
