Massachusetts Arms Smith Patent Breech Loading Civil War Carbine
Blade front sight and folding elevator rear sight on barrel with the distinctive spring steel latch and inside-the-guard release. Full marks on left side of the action: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS." and "ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE, U.S.A." next to the saddle ring bar. Smooth straight grip stock, with a pair of "JN" cartouches on the left side of the wrist and a smooth carbine buttplate. One of the more popular cavalry carbines of the Civil War.

Condition: Very fine, with 75% of the original blue finish, showing brown spotting and areas of brown patina, along with some mild handling marks. 50% original bright case colors remain visible on the receiver, strongest in the protected areas around the hammer and saddle ring bar, with a mixed brown and gray patina on the remainder. Stock is also very fine, with some tiny chips around the buttplate, light pressure dents and spots of discoloration on the buttstock. Mechanically excellent.
