4pp. letter from an unidentified Union soldier of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry. Datelined ''Camp Brightwood near Washington, D.C. / 7 February 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''...Dear Friend...the going is bad...and teams have all they can do to follow one of these...mules teams carry...barrels of beef over the river...but the going is slightly improving...most likely something will be done in the fighting...Brown...was a little to bad that he would not let John have the skin as that would get enough Whiskey to kill him if it is as poor as we get hear four of us cooks get these gallons of and drinked the most of it in about three days...I wish that Ed had come out here in the fall he could have done well cutting wood for Uncle Sams. He gives 95 cents a card and rations...I have often thought that we should never see fight. the nearest we have come to it was the other day some of our boys got into a dispute with the dirty six as we call them...when the time came to fight 36 wont their so our boy waited in the store and sent for him but the fellow got licked...their was three of the 36 in the store our boy goes up to one we says do belong to 36 and knocked into grease spat on throwed out...and served the others two in like manner...''
